Are you adapting fast enough to grow in the digital world ?

As digital technologies permeate all aspects of business and operations, companies around the world need to anticipate the need for massive change and fast adaption over the next few years to stay ahead – and survive!

Companies often experience substantial difficulties when exploring and launching digital initiatives and transformation programes – on time and on budget and with the impact to business and organization as planned. There are manifold reasons for this. From our experience we identified key steps for companies to consider as they seek to capitalize on disruption:

  • Communicate your Digital Strategy: People can’t change what they don’t understand. Transformation begins with creating a sense of purpose and a common understanding by defining and communicating a compelling strategy for the digital economy. Communication from leadership about the need for change is one of the three most effective means of building a growth and change-embracing culture.
  • Become Fluid: Digital leaders focus on breaking down silos and keeping the organizational structure more fluid than fixed in order to respond to the dynamic nature of the digital economy. Very digital organizations were almost four times as likely as not-very-digital companies to be fluid.
  • Create Think Teams: In launching digital initiatives, leading companies bring together cross-functional teams, including employees with deep industry knowledge, analytics skills, creative skills, policy knowledge, and more. Diverse, winning teams often focus on using an agile approach to development, using design thinking, and deploying a MVP approach to new-product rollouts.
  • Experiment and Adopt: Digital innovation means working with and exploiting data in completely new ways. And digital organizations must adopt a mind-set of speed and experimentation. As they make this shift, companies are focusing on developing faster responses to customer insights and market shifts, as well as making full use of assets and capabilities that are available in the cloud.
  • Rethink IT: Legacy IT is often too slow and rigid for digital businesses. As companies modernize they are looking to gain flexibility, scalability, and – above all – speed. Increasingly, this means leveraging cloud services and an API/services-based infrastructure.  CDOs collaborate closely with CIOs in this IT transformation.

Our Methods & Concepts

mobileVision develops innovative ideas and validates promising business models in extremely short time frames. Innovative products and services are the key to new customers and markets. The unique set of methods employed by mobileVision is based on the latest thinking and practices as used e.g. in Silicon Valley. Our mobileVision portfolio approach optimizes the risk profile of your innovation strategy. Only promising business ideas, verified by the market, will be upgraded to create a new venture – holistically.

An idea is not a business!

Our New Business Readiness Audit™ of your innovative future revenue portfolio delivers great insights into its market feasibility. We provide you with the facts & figures to seven key questions:

  1. What is the right value proposition and matching market opportunity?
  2. Is the ‘Window of Opportunity’ still open, or might it be missed quickly?
  3. Does the business model make sense? Is it defendable versus your competition?
  4. How does the technical feasibility of your solution stack up?
  5. Is the ecosystem in place?
  6. How can the development/launch process be accelerated and optimized?
  7. Is the business case realistic?

All past investment is sunk cost, unless it can be recovered from future revenues. We will tell you ‘the unbiased truth’ – and nothing but the truth, rationalizing the key question of ‘is it really worth your money?’. We prepare go/no go-milestones and all the necessary details to support a fact-based decision.

How you create is as important as what you create.

mobileVision has combined the best of the ‘design thinking’ and ‘lean start-up’ methodologies which are widely used in high-tech firms today.

The ‘Lean Start-up Methodology’ (LSM) is an approach for launching products, services and businesses. It relies on validated learning, experimentation and iterative product releases to shorten development cycles, constantly measure progress and get valuable customer feedback. Using LSM you get to market fast and get to market at favourable cost!

The ‘Design Thinking Methodology’ (DTM) is a proven technique for solving complex problems and generating new ideas through creative exploration based on a deep understanding of consumers’ needs. It is open to new ideas, searches systematically for solutions from a customer perspective, brings people with different skills together and models ideas to learn, iterate and refine – until it is right!

Your business model – on one single page!

The Lean Business Model Canvas (LBMC) is a well-proven strategic management and entrepreneurial tool. It allows you to describe, design, challenge, invent and pivot your new business model in a very systematic way. With this methodology, originally developed by Alexander Osterwalder and later adapted by Ash Maurya to better reflect the specific needs of start-ups, the team can stay focused on creating value and not waste paper and time.

Carving-out your new Business?

The decision as to whether you integrate the new business into your established core business or create a new unit or carve-out is yours alone. But we often find that a more entrepreneurial environment needs to be created. This could be done via a carve-out in a lean start-up approach – a choice that needs thorough preparation, clear rationalization, and much guidance. Such a decision is typically associated with the explicit expectation of gaining speed, focus and determination, and quite often with radical simplification.

CEO/Managing Partner

A quick glance at my background
  • Combined Business and Engineering Degree
  • 33 years of top management consulting (Roland Berger, UBM, Mercer/Oliver Wyman, CSMG Adventis, Arthur D. Little)
  • Focus on salses & marketing as well as operational issues as well as (wireless) telecommunications and high-tech industries

My place in the mobileVision Expert Network

As the CEO and one of the Co-Founders of the mobileVision Group I’m passionate about building the firm and creating a unique model how innovations in telecoms and adjacent markets can really take-off. I’m managing several major accounts myself and focus on New Business Development & Marketing.

People in the mobileVision Expert Network aren’t like those in other firms: We are hands-on, deeply involved in client work, running assignments ourselves and bringing disruptive ideas and inspiration to our clients and our team alike.

What experience do I add to the mobileVision Expert Network?

It’s all been about helping customers to grow profitable. Over the last 30+ years I have worked for leading top management consulting firms like Oliver Wyman, Adventis and Arthur D. Little (some of them I even helped to build from scratch). Since 1995 almost exclusively in and around the telecoms sector, particularly in wireless.

Why do people approach me?

All sorts of questions ranging from: ”What is the most promising business model for this new opportunity?”, “Can you help to build a new ecosystem for this innovation?”, “How can I find the best team to get this done?” etc. The cool thing, it’s mostly all about the future and how to get it managed by bringing ideas, people and money together.

What is my passion outside work?

My other great passion belongs to motor sport and historic cars – working deep in the engine compartment and getting the best out of it is fascinating. Beyond that I’m a passionate skier and fisher man. And of course enjoying the wonderful live that my hometown Munich has to offer.

What is my favorite innovation?

Clearly the invention of the Internet as it brought together formerly disconnected networks, people and even societies. It has boosted our standard of living significantly, however also our capacity for distraction, procrastination, extended inquiries into trivia. Innovation is the constant of our lives – most interesting questions for me: Where are good ideas come from? How do they catch on? How to turn them into reality?

A quick glance at my background
  • Study of computer science at Technical University Karlsruhe
  • Industry positions with i2, IBM and Daimler Benz IT
  • 25 years in consulting with Coopers & Lybrand and Booz & Company, thereof 12 years Partner in Booz’ CMT practice; Technology leader Europe
  • Multi year supervisory board member of MTS and Sitronics, Russia’s largest telecom and HighTech corporations
  • Emphasis on Growth, New Market Entry, Innovation in TIMES markets

My place in the mobileVision Expert Network

All my TIMES clients innovate strongly, yet they struggle with the dynamics, especially in growing still small new ideas within the big corporation. This is where we from mobileVision engage to boost an idea to market success. There is no better reward then seeing visions come true.

What experience do I add to the mobileVision Expert Network?

Throughout my career as an advisor, manager and board member in the TIMES sector I have seen the challenges to get innovation right, to screen for the top new products and services and to align team and organisation for a rapid and successfull design and launch. I have been engaged in the ideation, the capability set-up and the day-to-day doing to get the job done. There are many lessons learned and known failure patterns to avoid. This know how, combined with deep industry insights and a clear understanding of the perspective of senior management and stakeholders allows me to advise and lead new endeavours. So I have done for TV-phones, 2G/3G products, IP-PBXs, telco software, IT-service products such as hosting, aftermarket services, mobile applications, setting up corporate incubators and many more.

Why do people approach me?

Well, I typically chime in when guidance and contribution to the innovation process is needed, e.g. for diagnosing reasons for slow time-to-market or for enhancing the entire solution go-to-market approach; Executives usually approach me with questions around ensuring success, risk mitigation, people requirements, organizational roadblocks and economic impact.

What is my passion outside work?

My passion beyond work centers around family, sports, international travel and music. As everybody I constantly struggle with combining all these. But you can ski in fresh powder with your kids in the French Alps and wear a headset (not recommended though)….

What is my favorite innovation?

Innovators like Einstein and Moore have laid the ground for what we have and what will come. The biggest innovations, however, still are to come and will enable that rare resources on our planet can be maintained and global pollution will be reduced. In today’s world my personal favorites are tablets, wearables (to improve my golf swing) and …. sports cars!

A quick glance at my background
  • MBA from INSEAD, Fontainebleau and BA Economics from Dartmouth College
  • 25+ years in management consulting with focus on technology and telecommunications; leadership positions at Booz&Co., DiamondCluster, Mercer and Oliver Wyman
  • Expert in Digital Business Building, Focus on Digital Strategy and Digital Transformation
  • Multi-year experience as interim manager on executive level in telecoms and technology with focus on organizational transformation

My place in the mobileVision Expert Network

Digital creates enormous opportunities and challenges for our clients.

Pursuing and realizing the right digital strategy can enable our clients to transform their business and operations models, build new ecosystem platforms, open new revenue streams and create new forms of customer engagement. Clients can literally leapfrog their competition and change their competitive playing field.

On the other hand, the failure to understand and exploit digital dynamics can quickly undermine established positions and businesses.

Bringing in my experience in digital transformation, my role is to bring together the expertise and solutions within our group to help our clients seize their digital opportunities.

What experience do I add to the mobileVision Expert Network?

Throughout my 25+ years career as a management consultant and interim manager I have focused on technology and telecommunications. The pace of change has accelerated throughout this time in line with exponential growth in underlying technologies such as computing, storage and communications.

Therefore, digital has become a central issue for clients across a broad set of industries. I have had the opportunity to consult with clients in sectors such as telecoms, utilities, financial services, transportation, retail, healthcare and industry on their digital strategy and transformation.

As part of this work I have launched new digital businesses, designed and prototyped new digital services and business models, implemented new digital operations models and processes and defined holistic digital strategies with my clients.

Why do people approach me?

The starting positions of our clients regarding digital differ significantly. Some of our clients are looking to define their digital strategy, some are looking to detail and design their new digital services and business models, yet others are looking to prototype and launch their digital solutions and build their digital businesses. Some are looking to digitize their operations and process models. And others are already in a relaunch model after digital initiatives have failed to be realized or deliver the expected impact on their business.

In all these cases, we can put together the right experiences, competencies and solutions to support our clients, bringing together a rich network of consulting, management and technology experts.

What is my passion outside work?

I greatly enjoy running and hiking. Running the Munich half-marathon through the “Englische Garten” or hiking through the “Münchner Hausberge” are always highlights for me.

For the mind, I am fascinated by philosophy from Buddhism to German and French existentialism.

What is my favorite innovation?

There is a wonderful Chinese proverb “May you live in interesting times”. We are indeed living in very interesting times! So rather, than one favorite innovation, I believe the rapid innovation that we experience around us, is exciting.

Exciting both in the opportunities that are created in terms of such as new experiences, vast information, social exchange, greater productivity, cleaner energy, better health and deeper intelligence.

But also giving rise to significant concerns and risks. Potential disruption and displacement on a societal, organizational and individual level are challenges that go hand-in-hand with the opportunities that are created.

My place in the mobileVision Expert Network

My specialty is disruption in complex IT environments. As legacy IT environments across industries turn out to be major roadblocks to innovation more and more, old-fashioned ERP systems need to be transformed into highly dynamic , API-based platforms. What is the right solution for a given client? How can the badly needed technical innovation be achieved in a disruptive manner to dramatically improve time-to-market? Here, I provide answers and solution proposals

What experience do I add to the mobileVision Expert Network?

As a hybrid senior executive, I bring commercial and marketing expertise as well as deep technical understanding to the mobileVision network. As business transformation and e-business director, I transformed two huge telecom operators into omnichannel and online powerhouses. As global COO of a platform-based media business in eight international markets, I transformed a formerly project-based company into a strong product-focused organisation, providing Europe’s largest independent omnichannel entertainment platform.

Why do people approach me?

How can we simplify processes for a given client? What does the digital business model look like? What digital platform decision is right? How can we achieve scale across channels? How can we create an omnichannel business? These are typical questions for me. I am happy and ready to answer these. I have answered them a number of times before, for different clients, in different environments, I adapted solutions and kicked off their evolution

What is my passion outside work?

My family and an exclusive circle of good friends. I love outdoor sports and hence my new Specialized Turbo e-bike, as well

What is my favorite innovation?

Beacons, based on BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) technology, is a thrilling new way of guiding consumers in physical stores. We have only seen the beginning of a beaconized customer experience. Beacons will change the way we interact with brands, and hence they are certainly among my favorite innovations. Another one is cloud-based ERP systems. They bring flexibility and – actually – freedom to legacy envionments that lie in chains , today. Cloud-based ERP systems will change the corporate IT reality at unprecedented speed

  • Focus on strategy, financings and deal-making in mobile, telecom, Internet and other high-tech sectors

My place in the mobileVision Expert Network

I provide a banker’s perspective and the nuts-and-bolts of Corporate Venturing to MobileVision. These days innovation is crucial to remaining competitive, yet it often takes place outside of large corporations in startups around the world. It is important for mobileVision’s clients to participate in Funding & Transactions to gain access to important innovations, and I bring that capability. Consulting and banking thoughtfully combined is a powerful tool for creating value.

What is my passion outside work?

My wife and I enjoy travel, and we have been to most parts of the world. Many of our trips involve scuba diving. When not traveling, I enjoy going to the gym, which is physically demanding, but mentally relaxing. The relaxation allows good ideas to percolate.

What is my favorite innovation?

No doubt the smartphone because it connects me to nearly all the knowledge and all the people in the world in a device that sits in my pocket. It’s an incredible development that will reorder human lives. My favorite ancient innovation is the library. Of course it rests on other important innovations like speech and writing, but someone thought to systematically catalog knowledge and make it available to others as a foundation from which to build. It’s an innovation at the base of all other innovations.

What experience do I add to the mobileVision Expert Network?

Law, investment banking, startup CEO, and scuba diving.

Why do people approach me?

Because I’ve been trained and have experience in a variety of areas including law, consulting, banking, economics, etc., people come to me with their more complex business problems that simultaneously touch on many of those areas.

Ideally I can combine being with my family and enjoying sports like skiing and golf. In quiet times I enjoy very much managing the inventory of my red wine cellar (especially the clearance part).

What is my favorite innovation?

Obviously the arrival of smart phones and apps have changed everything. Needless to say, IP-video and VR excite me a lot and we will see tons of new businesses and applications on the basis of this

Why do people approach me?

I am passionate about the future of mobile transactional services – market needs, underlying technologies, and business models. What is my passion outside work?

Travel and cultures. I was fortunate to have travelled to or lived in many countries on all continents. This strengthened my business expertise, enriched my personal life, and brought a lot of pleasure to my family. I have relatives, friends and business associates all over the world, and make every effort to maintain strong relationships with them.

What is my favorite innovation?

I am fascinated with all the innovations that have “shrunk” the world. This includes all communications technologies (wire line, radio, and satellite) and all the services that were layered over them (starting with voice, fax, TV… all the way to the Internet and massive impact social media).
Same with the means of transportation on land, water and air. Without a wide-body Boeing 747 we would not be where we are today.

What is my passion outside work?

Spending quality time with my family and travelling. With passion but limited skill, I love doing sports – tennis, cat sailing, running and biking –, and working with new media: web, video, visual programming.

What is my favorite innovation?

With Internet connectivity evolving from flaky 56k modems to wireless broadband, our world has just started to become mobile. This will not stop because people are mobile, and mobile will determine business strategies.

Peter Milan Trapp

A quick glance at my background
  • Business and Data Science Degree (KU Eichstätt-Ingostadt / Tongji University Shanghai)
  • Top management consulting at Roland Berger with focus on corporate restructuring and digital
  • Spearheaded (corporate) innovation by managing large incubation and acceleration engagements and even did it myself: successfully launched and scaled an Insurtech startup.

My place in the mobileVision Expert Network

I love innovation. But as eye-opening, fascinating, brutal, smart, transformative and challenging it can be, it takes drive and experience to bring innovation to life. This is what keeps me busy at day and awake at night – and I love it.
Currently, I am deep-diving into Blockchain and Distributed Ledger Technologies. Hit me up to know what I bring back to the shore!

What experience do I add to the mobileVision Expert Network?

Professionally trained in strategy, venture building, building and advising corporate accelerators, Financial analysis and modelling. In charge to manage and execute innovation, I built the world’s largest Accelerator for the World Bank Group and ventured several startups (Insurtech, Education) and advised leading corporations re incubation and acceleration.

Why do people approach me?

Big corporates approach me to assess their innovation capabilities. The initiation of new digital initiatives is frequently supported with my distinct skills in corporate venturing, technology analysis, business modelling and due diligence. In the start-up scene I advise teams re USP, positioning, business models and scaling.

What is my passion outside work?

On the strings (guitar, violin), off the grid (hiking), on and under water (sailing, scuba diving for 20 years). … and haute cuisine, surprisingly though given my poor home cooking skills.

What is my favorite innovation?

Can openers, trolley wheels and the Polymerase chain reaction. Wait, what? Why?
After the can itself, it took us 20 years to invent a can opener and trolley wheels have been invented only after we stepped on the moon. Now imagine: What obvious innovations are in plain sight in front of you?
You can find innovation everywhere at any time. So did Kary Mullis in 1983, at one night driving on the Pacific Coast Highway. He simply combined existing technologies to create something new: an easy, cheap, and reliable way to repeatedly replicate a focused segment of DNA, which got him a Nobel prize.

Competencies

We help our clients to plan and execute successful product launches and carve-outs
– and are prepared to take responsibility as entrepreneurs!

Mobile Financial Services

Mobile Financial Services have made massive inroads in the unbanked world and services are about to enter the first world. But when will e.g. mobile payment finally take off  in the sophisticated European and US banking environments? The idea of paying on-the-go with a few keystrokes on the phone, scanning a barcode, or simply waving a smartphone at a checkout register certainly sounds attractive. However, when will consumers and retailers overcome the cost and security concerns and embrace this?

Around the globe, we see few significant successes but hundreds of failed attempts to introduce  mobile payment and mobile wallets – by start-ups as well as some big corporations, ranging from retailers to telcos, banks and other financial institutions., Getting it right, achieving fast adoption and monetizing it really is cruicial.

mobileVision team members have made some major contributions to a number of mobile financial services initiatives launched in Europe and the US. We also supported some of the most advanced and promising mobile payment and mobile wallet concepts, which focus on addressing real customer needs while reducing complexity. We develop executable strategies, lead proposition and product development, acquire the eco-systems and execute product launch projects.

Digital Commerce

On Black Friday 2013 – the Friday following Thanksgiving and the beginning of the top-selling Christmas shopping season – one out of every four dollars spent online at retail websites came from a mobile device. For retailers who had already embraced mobile, it was a day of celebration, a culmination of their hard work and foresight. For retailers who did not get their share of the mobile revenue pie, it was the bitter wake-up call: push on with your digital program, or your consumers will leave you behind and swap to your competitors!

Digital Commerce – the convergence of mobile, online and in-store commerce – will significantly change consumer behaviour and will transform the traditional retail business into a completely new ecosystem. For the players involved, especially retailers, digitization will become a strategic priority to (1) protect their core business and (2) apply existing capabilities to new areas. In this respect, they will have to address the relevant challenges and opportunities as they unfold at rapid intervals:

  • Create a coherent cross-channel thinking and culture to bridge offline vs. online shopping
  • Establish seamless commerce by integrating online, mobile and social media components with smart stores
  • Generate additional customer benefits through engaging experiences driving customer interaction and loyalty
  • Increase customer value, using analytics of real-time consumer behaviour data
  • Develop and launch innovative products and sustainable business models
  • Optimize and integrate the complex technical and processes for digital commerce innovations (incl. iBeacon, NFC, BLE and QR codes)
mobileVision is working extensively with service providers, telcos and retailers on analyzing these game-changing trends and the influencing digital commerce KPIs. Based on dedicated toolkits for evaluating the player’s specific capabilities, we have guided and accelerated successful implementations of sophisticated yet practical solutions in digital commerce initiatives across Europe and the US.

Smart Technologies

Connected devices are transforming an isolated element and single product purchase into a solution and services which generate recurring revenues. The core Internet of Things (IoT) value, however, will be created in the new services related to these devices. And this is just the beginning. Ubiquitous networks and device proliferation enable access to an exploding amount of traditionally silo-ed data; and Big Data engines, business intelligence tools and data science will allow for tapping into totally new pools of value – in real time!

Whether you are a corporation which is enhancing its products with an IoT offering, already a smart product company or a telco or utilitiy, a steady stream of new IoT proposition launches could propel your business dramatically and add to your growth story!

mobileVision brings the market and technology expertise, as well as a clear vision for unlocking the mass market potential from IoT.

We are helping our clients, especially smart product companies, telcos, utilities or system providers to mobilize resources and steer the right path within the constantly-shifting industry boundaries.

Digital Transformation

It is not enough simply ‘being online’ – each business must embrace the digital revolution, or else your business will not stay relevant! As the world goes 5G, state-of-the-art business propositions must fully embrace mobility. A rigorous assessment of our clients’ business reveals the opportunities and threats from the digital world of Web 4.0. We identify what is needed to transform the traditional business, either by building on new technologies and platforms for entire new businesses or by enhancing the ‘bricks-and-mortar’ business so that new or additional revenue growth can be achieved.

Businesses need to think about and recognize why they want to be more prolific online or via mobile, and the benefit(s) which will flow once that aim has been achieved.

mobileVision’s ‘Digital Readiness and Transformation Audit’ (DigiRTA) is an approach for gaining significant cost savings, new revenues and customer engagement by digital means. It is designed to audit, boost and transform processes in marketing, sales and customer service.
DigiRTA – the process

  • Audit, further investigations, and choosing ‘low hanging’ and instant projects
  • Planning the boost & transformation
  • Choosing the strategy & designing the roadmap
  • Execution and follow-up

Each of the four phases is valuable in itself, providing concrete benefits. Thus the process can be performed easily one phase at a time. DigiRTA is focused; it is used with each product/concept/idea separately, not with the whole business at once. The combination of our strategy design capabilities, Design Thinking Methodology, and our rapid prototyping approach via our developer eco-system allows us to team with our clients for fast deployment of digital businesses or digitized product and service offerings.

As an Entrepreneur, I try to push the limits. Pedal to the metal.
